Flying Facts

In April 1966 Pan Am's founder and all round aviation legend Juan Trippe ordered the first Boeing 747 Jumbo jet. It entered service with the American carrier in January 1970. The 1,000th 747 was delivered in 1993; almost 1,400 have been built with another 120 on order.

I remember the excitement accompanying the release of the 747. My dad took one of the first flights out of Dulles Airport on a Pan Am 747. It was H-U-G-E.
And nearly forty years later, it's still going strong. Amazing.

I flew from LHR to JFK in 1971, so again very early on it's life. It was on a Panam flight, I spent the weekend in NYC - just brilliant for a twenty year old. I remember the best thing about the trip, apart from the flight, was spending hours and hours in NYC record shops buying all sorts of things I couldn't get back home. Betty Wright's 'Clean Up Woman' was my best buy!
