If the three-letter airport identifier appearing on baggage tags and tickets for Fresno (FAT) caused problems with one overweight passenger, the identifier initially assigned for Sioux City, Iowa, caused even more trouble. It came under attack from state officials until the Federal Aviation Administration agreed that SUX was an unacceptable abbreviation for the facility.
Years ago at Gatwick (LGW) when it wasn't the sophisticated airport it is now an American passenger said to me. "LGW, what's that stand for Long God’amn Walk?" He'd think it was a stroll these days if he flew into Heathrow and his flight was parked on one of the many farther away stands. I’ve a theory that much of Heathrow is actually in Hampshire and they’ve just joined it up with travallators and undercover walkways.

I'm wracking my brain trying to remember his name (and it is my shame that I can't not his...old age is all I can come up with for an excuse), he was a columnist of some renown, died fairly recently, spoke so that most people didn't know he had a speech impediment.....

Anyway, he had a theory that flight really was not possible, that the airlines had you you walk about halfway to your destination, but in a room for a while with loud sound effects and such, then had you exit into a different hall to walk the rest of the way to your destination.
